Né en 1940, passionné par les mystères de la chambre noire dès l’adolescence, Jacques Vilet a suivi des études d’ingénieur commercial qui l’ont conduit vers une société d’enquêtes par sondages à Bruxelles. En 1969, il a plutôt choisi de se consacrer à une photographie d’ordre artistique, tout en enseignant les mathématiques à temps partiel. Pendant cette période d'une douzaine d'années, il a continué en autodidacte l'exploration de la photographie notamment lors de stages aux Rencontres d'été à Arles et à Rochester-USA. 

L'animation d'un atelier de photographie aux Ateliers de la rue Voot, à la fondation desquels il a participé, lui a permis d'enseigner l'histoire de la photographie, de se former à l'évaluation des travaux et d'y enseigner notamment la technique du Système des Zones (Zone System, d'Ansel Adams).

De 1981 à 2003, il a été professeur de photographie à l’Ecole de Recherche Graphique (Erg) de Bruxelles. Il est membre de l’Académie royale de Belgique (Classe des Arts) depuis 2007.

Depuis 1978, il a eu l’occasion d’exposer ses œuvres en Belgique et à l’étranger.

Born in 1940, fascinated by the mysteries of the dark room as a teenager, Jacques Vilet studied commercial engineering which led him to a survey company in Brussels. In 1969, he chose instead to devote himself to artistic photography, while teaching mathematics part-time. During this period of a dozen years, he continued to explore photography on his own, notably during summer workshop in the Rencontres d’Arles and in Rochester-USA. 

The animation of a photography workshop at the Ateliers de la rue Voot, in the founding of which he participated, allowed him to teach the history of photography, to train in the evaluation of works and to teach in particular the technique of the Zone System (Zone System, Ansel Adams).

From 1981 to 2003, he was professor of photography at the School of Graphic Research (Erg) in Brussels. He has been a member of the Royal Belgian Academy (Classe des Arts) since 2007.

Since 1978 he has had the opportunity to exhibit his works in Belgium and abroad.
