1962 marked a turning point in Dubuffet’s art, with the birth of a new cycle entitled L’Hourloupe, which introduced a playful, imaginary little world filled with people, objects and cellular forms interconnecting in a limitless interplay of combinations. Dubuffet used industrial materials, vinyl paints, markers, felt-tip pens or biros, with a preference for the three-coloured system of blue, white and red, plus black. The fundamental role of the outline was to differentiate the entangled elements, whilst the hatching restored continuity and uniformity. One of Dubuffet’s most original creations, and the culmination of the Hourloupe cycle, was his stage piece Coucou Bazar, described as an “animated painting”, into which he condensed painting, sculpture and movement. The piece was presented in 1973 in New York and Paris, then in 1978 in Turin. The imposing sculpture Don Coucoubazar, one of the four “metallic effigies” created alongside the stage piece, is a major figure within the museum’s collection.
